Hi Everyone - I decided to start this new thread so those of you who use the iPhone app to access forum won't have such a long list of posts to scroll through.

Please note that the iPhone app to access forum does not display all posts - only a short list of the most current posts. Use forum on the web program to see all posts as well as to search for posts using keywords.

Please feel free to post questions to me here on this thread. I try to read all posts on all public threads, but I will always check this one for sure.

I typically post replies on weekdays but I occasionally post on the weekend as well.

Best,

Hi Kathy

I have a question about the 'old' method of carb counting- facilitated by using a pencil & a piece of paper, not a $600. cell smartphone.

I have MyNetDiaryD Pro. I know my recommended daily calories (1800), I know how many Starch Points, Meat Points, Fat Points, Fruit Points, etc. If I add up all those CATEGORY points, I get 28 (carb points) X 15 (carb units) = 420. I'm guessing this would be WAY off

So, how do I now incorporate the 'old' method to this App? I just can't wrap my mind around how.

Thanx!

Hi JBurnett, you might find my article on diabetes management helpful - it addresses carbs: http://www.mynetdiary.com/food-diary-for-diabetes.html

28 carb choices or carb exchanges seems a bit high for a day, even spead out amongst 3 meals and 3 snacks.

For folks trying to control their blood glucose, especially post-prandial (2-hr after meal peak):

As I described in the article, most women do well trying 30-45 grams total carbs/meal whereas men can try 45-60 grams/meal. Snacks 15-30 grams total carbs for most folks.

Of course, it needs to be individualized - very active people might need more. If you take insulin or a diabetes med with a high risk of hypoglycemia, be sure to talk with your doctor about appropriate meal goals (or ask to be referred to a CDE or diabetes clinic).

So, you can't set total carb goals per meal and snack, but you can simply look at your meal carb totals.

If you have Max membership on the web or iPhone Diabetes Tracker app, you can track diabetes carb count and the total carb for meals and snacks (grouped by time) will be displayed for you. I love this feature.

I had a major mutha-'O-all-strokes at a young age. It wasn't lifestyle related, but genetics- thanks Dad. :) I'm confined to a wheelchair, and the doctor suggested a daily calorie amount of 1800.

I'm going to talk to a local dietician too, but do you feel comfortable venturing a guesstimate at how many carb/meal & carb/snack ranges, as you outlined above, that I should be at for 1800 calories?

...wish you could edit- clicked send too soon...I do have the diabetes version of the App, and I'm pre-diabetic, I think my ACDC-R2D2 number is 5.5. I was at 12.0 a few years ago, and don't want to be put back on the program.

Should water be water? I drink bunches of unsweetened iced tea. Should I be putting that under the meals?

Hi JBurnett, work with your dietitian on total carb goals for meals and snacks. It is best to individualize goals as well as work with your meds/insulin use. Also depends upon when you are active (yes, including activities from your wheelchair and PT). As just an example, I might start with 45 grams total carbs per meal and 15 grams total carbs per snack but have blood glucose testing help inform for changes.

Did you see my articles on diabetes and on using the diabetes tracker on the main website? Here's a link: http://www.mynetdiary.com/diet-and-weight-loss-resources.html scroll to the bottom of the screen!

Hi Asunlovingmom - ideally, meet most of your water requirement from water.
Don't count alcoholic drinks for hydration.
You can count caffeine-containing beverages as fluid. In fact, unsweetened tea is a healthful beverage.

To track total water intake, include all water and beverages in your food log. Some brand beverages might not include water content - so just add how much you are drinnking as municipal water (tap water).

Kathy, I no longer have OT/PT, and I dont't take Metformin/ Insulin, but I'll definately touch base with a local diatician, and yes, I've seen your blog/site. *Whew*

Thanx for getting back, this 'D' App rawks. :)

Hi JBurnett - also, you might find the Joslin Diabetes Center website interesting! Lots of great info: http://www.joslin.org/diabetes-information.html
