A hearty, less sugary version of the popular comfort food.
13 ingredients
16 oz Beef ground 93% lean 7% fat raw
3/4 cup, chopped Onions raw
1 large (7-1/4" to 8-1/2" long) Carrots raw
8oz Tomato sauce canned no salt added
1 tbsp Tomato paste canned no salt added
1/4 cup Ketchup no salt added
1 tablespoon Mustard yellow prepared
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
4 roll Hamburger or hot dog buns whole wheat
5 steps
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and onions and saute for about 7-9 minutes, or until the onions have softened and browned and the meat is no longer pink.
- While cooking beef and onions, peel and grate a large carrot, about 2/3 cup grated. Substitute shredded carrot for grated carrot if you prefer a slightly chewy texture.
- Add the grated carrot, chili powder, garlic powder, and black pepper to the skillet and saute for a minute.
- Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, ketchup, vinegar, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet and stir to mix well. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
- While the meat mixture is simmering, toast the buns. Serve about 3/4 cup of meat mixture on each bun. Enjoy!
Tips:
The preparation and cook time are happening simultaneously, so this dish only takes about 20 minutes from start to finish.
Hamburger buns are the traditional way to serve Sloppy Joes, but hot dog buns will also work and are a little easier to hold. Or, you could use 8 little slider buns instead.
If doubling the recipe, consider using a slow cooker set on high for 2 hours. Saute the beef and onions first, then add everything to the slow cooker.
