BMI calculation issues Topic

Mom here got a Giant tall toddler the Pediatrician says his BMI too high.Dietician said it’s too low. No one agrees. Is it normal for a tall skinny long rectangle 2yr old kid with adult sized head 50.5 plus sz kids 10feet over 3ft 2 ...34.5lbs wears sz 5-6boys clothes some 4/5’s if they run big.His ribs slightly show very very picky eater very active. His bones feel bigger than mine! He loves quesadilla to almond milk. We give a Enfamil toddler milk 4oz averages 1000-1400 calories a day. Hates fruits. Does not eat junk foods we believe in fresh natural only. Loves wheat/rye breads with peanut butter. My daughter 19yrs old registers high BMI but Navy says it’s cause of muscular build she has 0% body fat 5ft2 (brothers gaining on her leaps y bounds). Is it normal for doctors to get such different BMI results to recommendations? One says increase calories other says cut then in half.I believe the Dietician is right.

How do I calculate BMI use it without a age appropriate guide for his tallness available to me?

Hi AmberVazquez: Welcome to MND! Glad you found us-
It sounds like you are concerned about your son’s current weight and what it might mean for the future. As a mom, I hear you. We worry if our kids are eating too much, not enough, sleeping too much, not enough, etc. Never an endless supply of concerns!! Every child is unique when it comes to their size and shape as well as growth rate. Typically the medical community is concerned when a child’s growth rate has crossed at least 2 percentile lines (like going from the 78th percentile to the 98th percentile) in a particular amt of time. As for ensuring your son is eating healthy, getting his nutrients in and not growing too quickly, I think you are on the right track! Find a pediatric Dietitian (https://www.eatright.org/find-an-expert) and discuss your concerns. Also finding a pediatrician that can answer your questions about growth rate, food preferences, and one that you feel like you can really TALK to is important. I like this website for general health information: https://www.webmd.com/parenting/baby/features/baby-growth-charts-what-influences-your-babys-growth#1
All the best to you! Joanna (Dietician)

NBA wrote me back sending a link to Body Size and Basketball -Topendsports where it lists Shaqs mamas growth chart records.Age 4 he wore sz12 shoe was 3ft 10.5 inches 56lbs.They said it should give me something more solid to go by since growth apps for 0-3yr toddlers no longer register him.Shows a line going to the sky at age 1 then well it’s flying above the 99% mark for head to height. Pediatrician have him at 99%+ sometimes 95%. He’s skinny yet a very high percentile. They joked to send him there way in 16yrs after seeing his picture.
After seeing your link I understand why the Pediatricians are saying half his calories to 500 they want to try Stunt his growth I guess.Yeah no Thankyou sounds unhealthy to me I will not be taking their advice.Going to find a 2nd Dietician with your link see if they agree with the other one have any tips to get him to eat without being so picky while I’m at it.Hasn’t helped that guidelines for his height groups are for kindergarteners not toddler with their night night bottle feedings.
