Eating in restaurants Topic

I love using this app and have found it to be the tool I’ve been most disciplined with. My biggest obstacle is entering food when I eat out, which is fairly often. I don’t eat at chain restaurants so the food I order isn’t likely in the database. I like to be accurate and use a food scale at home, but obviously not in a restaurant. How do I most accurately account for my meals out?

I know there are visual guides like the palm of your hand is 3 oz meat. Thumb tip is 1 Tablespoon, finger tip is 1 teaspoon. For steaks and burgers many restaurants give the weight.

I forgot, also in food log there is portion guide tab at the far right where they give you some tips

Hello Myoung1229- Eating out and figuring out accurate nutrients can be tricky for sure! If the restaurant is a mom & pop shop, then you can guess by entering a like item from a restaurant chain. I use this approach often. Or, you can try to find a recipe online for the dish - something you think would be made in a similar way, and enter the recipe yourself. That is a lot of work BTW. Or, you can include "Whole Foods" in the food item name search and use one of their items as an approximation of calories and macronutrients. They have a lot of foods to use and I have found that very helpful. Here is an article you may find helpful. Best, Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)

I just try and find something similar to what I ate in the database. When I log after going out to eat I usally log on the high side of the calories to be safe.

I guess and log on the high side as others are doing. Cautious eating. Seems to work.

I agree to log on the high side with restaurant estimations! Restaurant cooks often add extra fats to foods to make them taste great so you end up with hidden calories. My Niece's cooked vegetables at lunch restaurant yesterday were dripping with butter! Yikes!
