Hi Peteboot64- Welcome to MND! Pat yourself on the back for taking charge of your health. I am sorry to hear about your sciatica. That must be difficult in a variety of ways.
I would suggest talking with your doctor about next steps in DM prevention, especially since you are not able to do part of his recommendation (exercise) due to sciatica.
I am aware of many people who are taking metformin for the prevention/delaying of Type 2 DM. Of course I don't know your unique health and thus your doctor is the best person to decide with you the pros/cons of taking the medication.
You may also want to look into enrolling in a DM prevention class. Here's a link to the National Diabetes Prevention Program.

Here is some info from our blog on preventing diabetes which also might be useful.

Spelt Chocolate Chip Cookies

Spelt flour is high in protein, dietary fiber, potassium and magnesium. And antioxidants in cacao bean chocolate are quite healthy, too.

Ingredients

3/4 cup coconut palm sugar
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons agave syrup
1 1/2 cups Spelt flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon ground sea salt
3/4 cup Ghirardelli Chocolate 60% Cacao Bittersweet Baking Chips

Directions

Stir together coconut palm sugar and olive oil. Let sit for a few minutes to allow the coconut palm sugar to dissolve.

Add the egg and agave syrup and stir (by hand or with a mixer) until combined.

Add flour, baking soda and sea salt and stir together until just combined. Fold in cacao chocolate chips by hand.

Using a large cookie scoop form about 12-14 dough balls. Press a few more chocolate chips into the top of each dough ball. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough balls for at least 1-2 hours (or 1/2 hour in the freezer).

Preheat oven to 350 F and place chilled dough balls 2 inches apart on a baking sheet.

Bake for 8-10 minutes.

Hey Powin- Thanks for sharing the recipe. Happy Holidays! Joanna (MND Dietitian)

I am bit confused on how to use the nutrition information; to be more specific, raw vs cooked. Example: A staple weights 6oz before cooking but only 4 0z after cooking. The package information states that the total weight is 12oz, serves 2, serving size is 6oz and calories 120. The way I read it is that if I eat it raw I would get 120 calories, but since it loses one third of its weight during cooking, would I be getting just 80 calories?
Perhaps, I should ask it another way, should I enter in the pre-cook or after-cook weight?
I hope I was clear. Thank you in advance for your answer

Hi U1187527935,

It really depends on the food item. If it is meat, the raw amount will shrink 1 oz so 4 oz raw will be 3 oz cooked.

In your example, the 6 oz serving size would yield 120 calories.

If you are entering a food item, I would simply enter the cooked amount that you actually eat and the app will calculate it for you.

I hope this answers your question. Brenda (MyNetDIary Dietitian)

Great! Thank you. Yes, it makes sense, very smart app. To make sure I understand it correctly. In a recipe entry I should enter the raw weight; in the meal entry I should enter the weight I consumed.
Thank you again, it clarifies everything.

Hi U1187527935,

You got it!
Just double-check the food description to see if it refers to raw or cooked.
As you likely know, when meat weighs less after cooking, the calorie level is consistent (4 oz raw chicken is the same calories as 3 oz cooked chicken), but the loss of water content reduced the weight.

Happy Tracking!

Have been doing great on my plan. Losing about 2 lbs a week for 2 months. Now over the past 2 weeks I have lost nothing, zero. I have actually reduced my daily calorie intake to an average of 1100 calories a day (my plan allows 2211 a day) I have increased my daily activity adding rototiller operation daily, shoveling and raking and in general lots of heavy duty yard work. BUT Still> My weight loss has come to a screeching halt. What could have happened?
