female hormones, appetite, and metabolism Topic

Thanks in advanced for answering questions!

My understanding is that metabolism slows on your period. I've noticed that my appetite all but dissapears and eating more than a small amount at a time (~350 cal) is diffi. cult. I've been exercising quite a bit with weights + 40 minutes vigorous cardio, or an hour of vigorous cardio with no weights (don't have a heart rate monitor but it burns and I'm drenched in sweat). I don't want my calorie deficit (I'm essentially trying to maintain my weight at this point, plus or minus whatever normal fluctuations occur) to be too great as I understand that's not healthy, but even with all of the exercise, barely have an appetite. I'm not trying to gain muscle so consuming a surplus isn't my goal.

I guess I'm wondering how much metabolism actually slows with this shift, and how much less is my body telling me to eat?

Hi Turducken- Yes, female hormones do play a role in regards to appetite and body weight regulation. Science has shown that basal metabolic rate decreases during menstruation. If you are working hard to maintain your weight, you may need to find a creative way to increase your caloric intake during your period. Liquid calories (think smoothies) are a great way to do this as liquids go down easier than solids. Having several larger snacks during the day may work well for you and be easiest to tolerate with your intense workouts. I am guessing your appetite returns to a bit more "normal" after the menstruation week. Making a concerted effort to eat more during your period will help to ensure you maintain your weight. Hope this helps! Take Care, Joanna (MND Dietician)
