Benefits of Meatless Mondays

Health benefits of Meatless Mondays

Meatless Mondays are not a new concept. When staple foods were scarce during World War I, President Woodrow Wilson called on Americans to serve only meatless meals on Tuesday and at least one meatless meal every day. "Meatless Tuesdays" returned during World War II for the same reasons. Meatless Monday was founded in 2003 by marketing professional Sid Lerner, following the nutrition guidelines developed by the USDA. Today, Meatless Mondays exist as a way to help American's eat more plant-based meals, which are associated with positive health outcomes.

Positive impact on cholesterol levels

Plant-based eating has been shown to improve heart health. Did you know that plant-based diets are associated with a reduced total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol?

Decreased blood pressure

People who follow a vegetarian diet tend to have lower blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure increases your risk for heart disease and stroke, which are leading causes of death in the United States.

Reduction in overall mortality

One study found that greater plant protein intake was associated with reduced overall mortality in both men and women. Specifically, swapping egg and red meat protein for plant proteins made the difference.

Environmental benefits of Meatless Mondays

Raising animals for meat consumption requires significant water, land, and energy. In addition, animals such as cows produce substantial greenhouse gases. Cutting back on meat can reduce this impact. Plus, eating less meat just one day a week, sends a powerful message that plant-based products are desirable and delicious. It shows we are willing to support meat alternatives.

Cost savings of swapping plant-based proteins for meat

Meat is expensive to produce and distribute, and some experts say this cost will continue to rise. So, consider switching tempeh for beef and three-bean chili for chicken to reduce the cost of your weekly grocery bill.
