Sergey Oreshko co-founded MyNetDiary in 2005 with a simple goal: build a reliable, easy-to-use nutrition tracker that actually works. The idea came from a personal need — helping a family member find a better way to track food and manage weight. The tools available at the time fell short, so Sergey set out to build something better. What started as a basic spreadsheet evolved into one of the most comprehensive nutrition tracking platforms available today, now used by more than 30 million people worldwide.
With an engineering background — a Master of Engineering from the National Research Nuclear University (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute) — Sergey brought a data-driven mindset to nutrition technology. He designed MyNetDiary's user experience, backend architecture, and mobile apps from the ground up. His approach prioritized accuracy over shortcuts: building a staff-verified food database of 2M+ foods tracking 108 nutrients, sourced from USDA and University of Minnesota NCC research-grade data, rather than relying on crowdsourced entries.
Under Sergey's leadership, MyNetDiary earned the #1 ranking from Forbes Health (2025) and the top rating in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine's review of calorie-counting apps. The app was among the first to offer an iPhone web app for calorie counting in January 2008, and continues to pioneer new features, including AI Coach, AI Meal Scan, AI Restaurant Menu Scan, and the Advanced AutoPilot adaptive calorie system. Sergey also launched PlateAI, an all-in-one AI-powered diet and wellness platform, and the free Professional Connect service for registered dietitians.
Sergey writes about the technology and data behind effective nutrition tracking: food database quality and verification methodology, app comparisons, food logging speed and efficiency, AI-powered nutrition tools, and the product decisions that shape how people interact with their health data every day.
