Web recipe import limitations

Import handles English recipes only, and only pages our servers can reach. A site behind a CAPTCHA, or one that needs a paid sign-in, cannot be read. Pages built inside your browser rather than sent as plain HTML also fail. When a page will not import, copy the ingredients and paste them in instead.

MyNetDiary and PlateAI recipe import tool provides an easy way to load full recipe information into MyNetDiary or PlateAI, including automatically creating recipe ingredients. This tool can save a lot of time, but some limitations exist.

Support for English Language Only

At present, our algorithms support the English language only. We are planning to implement support for other languages in the future.

Unprotected Websites Only

As our servers do actual web recipe load and parsing, they need to be able to access the webpage with recipe information. If the website owner does not want any automated tools to access its webpages and protects the website with a so-called CAPTCHA tool (requiring a human to recognize images), then servers won't be able to access and load the recipe.

Similarly, if the recipe is located on a paid website and requires signing in to an account, our apps won't be able to access it.

If you can access such a protected website, you can try copying and pasting recipe ingredients into MyNetDiary or PlateAI import tool, to let the app do the most time-consuming task - matching recipe ingredients to foods.

Plain HTML Websites Only

This may be a bit technical! Some websites don't have a recipe webpage loaded from their servers as plain HTML, but instead, they build the webpage dynamically in your browser, executing programs in your browser.

If MyNetDiary or PlateAI cannot parse a recipe that you can see in your browser, you can identify whether it's a plain HTML or dynamically built page by disabling JavaScript in your browser and reloading the page. If the webpage continues to show the recipe, then it's a plain HTML; if not, then it's a dynamic website.

Cannot Load Recipe Text

If MyNetDiary or PlateAI cannot load some recipes in English, located on a public, non-protected website that supports plain HTML, and the recipe web page contains the text with recipe ingredients - you can copy these ingredients from this page and then paste them into the app. Or, you can create a recipe with Recipe Editor.
