Food Tracking and Weight Loss: What Our Study of 5132 Users Found

We followed 5132 people for 6 months and published the results in a peer-reviewed journal. The link between food tracking and weight loss turned out to be a staircase, and even 2 to 3 days a week made a real difference.
Does food tracking actually work, or do we in the app business just assume it does? We decided to answer that question the hard way: with a peer-reviewed study. Our team analyzed 6 months of real-world data on food tracking and weight loss from 5132 MyNetDiary users with a weight-loss goal, and published the results in the Journal of Medical Internet Research on August 13, 2026. The short version: tracking frequency and weight loss rose together, step by step, at every level we measured. This article walks through the findings, the honest limitations, and what the data suggests about building a tracking habit that lasts.
The study found a graded association: the more days per week people tracked their food, the more weight they lost over 6 months. Daily trackers, 6 to 7 days a week, lost 11.33% of body weight on average. Under 2 days a week: 6.84%. Every level in between took its own step up the staircase.
In the adjusted model, each additional tracking day per week was associated with 35% higher odds of losing at least 5% of body weight (adjusted odds ratio 1.35; 95% CI 1.31-1.40; P < .001), after accounting for age, sex, and starting BMI. Across the whole studied cohort, average loss was 9.3 kg (about 20.5 lb), or 9.5% of body weight; 70.1% lost 5% or more and 44.8% lost 10% or more.

In our data, more frequent tracking was associated with better results at every level, and 6 to 7 days per week came out on top. The number that encourages me most sits lower on the staircase. People who tracked just 2 to 3 days per week still lost 7.35% of body weight on average. More than half of them, 56.5%, reached clinically significant weight loss.
That matters because the most common way tracking fails is all-or-nothing thinking. Many people treat a few missed days as proof the habit is broken, and quit entirely. The data on food tracking and weight loss points the other way: partial consistency was still associated with meaningful results. Maybe a perfect record is not realistic this month. Fine. In our data a 2 or 3 day rhythm still beat nothing by a wide margin, and every added day was associated with better odds. One honest limit: the study cannot tell you personally how many days you need. It describes the pattern across the users we studied.

Yes. In our cohort, the longer the unbroken streak, the better the outcomes tended to be. Users whose longest consecutive-day streak passed 90 days, 39.4% of the cohort, lost 11.55% of body weight on average. And 81.2% of them reached the 5% threshold. Users whose longest streak was 7 days or fewer lost 4.21% on average, with 42.3% reaching the threshold.
A streak is a simple, visible form of consistency, and it compounds: each logged day makes the next one easier to remember and the habit harder to drop. The usual caveat applies here too: people who keep long streaks may simply differ in motivation or lifestyle, so the streak itself is not proven to cause the extra loss. If you break a streak, the useful move is to start a new one with the next meal, not to wait for the next Monday. We ran a retrospective cohort analysis of users who joined MyNetDiary in May 2025, followed through November 2025, and we published it as a research letter in the Journal of Medical Internet Research with the full methods, sensitivity analyses, and an anonymized replication dataset. From 412,193 new users, the analysis included the 5132 adults who had a weight-loss goal, logged food on at least 21 days, and recorded a weight every month.
This is an observational study, so it shows association, not proven causation: more motivated people may both track more and lose more. Only about 1.2% of new signups ended up in the cohort, all of them engaged users who kept logging, so the results describe those people rather than everyone who downloads a nutrition app. Medication use, including GLP-1 receptor agonists, was not measured, so some of the loss may reflect concurrent treatment. And the study was conducted by our own team, which is exactly why it went through independent peer review, discloses every conflict of interest, and comes with a dataset that lets anyone replicate the primary result. Sensitivity analyses using stricter definitions produced consistent results (adjusted odds ratios 1.27 to 1.36).
Our findings line up with decades of research on dietary self-monitoring, including the AHA/ACC/TOS obesity guideline that defines the 5% threshold we used, and they add adjusted, real-world frequency and streak data at a scale few prior studies have had.

In our study cohort, 70.1% of the 5132 users reached that threshold within 6 months, and 44.8% lost 10% or more.
Missing days is normal. It is not a reason to quit, either: in our data, users who tracked only 2 to 3 days per week still lost 7.35% of body weight on average, and more than half reached clinically significant weight loss. Longer streaks were associated with better results, so the best response to a missed day is simply logging your next meal.
The study was conducted by MyNetDiary Inc employees, including CEO Sergey Oreshko and registered dietitian Susan Heikkinen, and published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Medical Internet Research on August 13, 2026. Conflicts of interest are disclosed in the paper, it received no external funding, and an anonymized replication dataset was published with it so the primary analysis can be independently verified.
