Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications have transformed the conversation around weight loss. Products marketed as natural GLP-1 supplements are as plentiful as TV ads about prescription GLP-1 medications and promise to boost your body’s own GLP-1 activity. But the science behind these claims is far less convincing.
While early research hints that certain natural compounds may influence GLP-1 levels, evidence in humans remains limited. Furthermore, these supplements are not proven substitutes for GLP-1 medications and may cause side effects or interact with medications. Here’s what the research really says about natural GLP-1 supplements, and what may be more effective for supporting GLP-1 naturally.
“Natural GLP-1 supplements” are dietary supplements marketed as a way to increase the body’s own GLP-1 activity. However, this is largely a marketing term rather than a well-defined category of supplements with proven GLP-1 effects.
Certain plant compounds, including berberine, curcumin, and resveratrol, have gained attention because laboratory and animal studies suggest they may affect GLP-1 pathways. However, with so little human research, it’s unclear whether these results translate to any health benefits, let alone clinically significant results.
Additionally, natural doesn’t necessarily mean harmless. GLP-1 supplements can cause adverse effects, and taking high doses or combining multiple products can increase risk. Supplements may also alter the effects of prescription and over-the-counter medications or interact with them in harmful ways.
GLP-1 is a hormone that your body naturally produces in the GI tract after you eat. It helps regulate blood sugar, slows how quickly food leaves the stomach, and sends signals to the brain that contribute to feelings of fullness. Natural GLP-1, also called endogenous GLP-1, is short-lived, meaning the body breaks it down rapidly.
Cells in the wall of the small intestine make and release GLP-1. The levels rise within 15 minutes of eating and peak about 60 minutes after eating. While some natural supplements may influence GLP-1 receptor pathways, it’s inaccurate to call them GLP-1 boosters or recommend them for weight loss.

No natural supplement has comparable evidence showing that it can activate GLP-1 receptor pathways to the same degree or produce similar weight-loss results.
